Twitter

A popular microblogging and social networking service.

What is Twitter?

Twitter is a social media platform based on topics of conversation, not connections. Anyone can voice their opinion on any topic by simply tagging their post with a hashtag (#) (e.g. #Chats).

Unlike other social networks, connections on Twitter are essentially a one-way street. Every Twitter user has a feed of posts from the accounts they follow. A Twitter user writes a post and those posts appear in their followers' feeds. Any user can follow another user if they find it interesting, but a reciprocal relationship is not required.

Users can tweet (post) as often as they want. However, text messages can only contain 280 characters at a time. This limit was increased in 2017 from the previous 140-character limit. Users can also post videos, polls, and images.

All in all, Twitter has become a fast-acting opinion factory, capable of measuring public opinion in real time. This can be useful for seeing what people think about an event (such as an election or a live TV show) once it takes place.

In addition to the audience on the platform, celebrities, politicians and companies also regularly use Twitter to communicate with their followers. This large user base gives the platform so much value, despite being much smaller than Facebook.

Remark. Twitter is often referred to as a microblogging platform, but that's just slang to say that people are tweeting about themselves.

Who can see my tweets?

Messages posted on Twitter (called tweets) can be read by anyone. This also includes people who do not have their own Twitter account.

The exception to this rule is locked accounts (where only followers of the account can see your tweets). If a user's account is blocked, it means they have to approve people before they can follow them.

There are also direct messages (called DM). Basically, it's Twitter's internal messaging platform. There are rules about who can send direct messages, which basically means you can send messages to anyone you follow. Click the envelope icon at the top of the page to send a direct message.

Remark. Direct messages are ignored by the vast majority of users due to the large amount of spam being sent on the platform.

When and how often should I tweet?

The general rule of thumb is to tweet 35 times a day. For these tweets, try to give 90% of the time and only ask for 10%. This means you only need 1 in 10 tweets for people to do something (like buy a product or sign up for a newsletter).

Most people also recommend retweeting someone else at least once a day. Retweets are essentially Twitter's currency. So by retweeting others, you are in a way encouraging your own tweets to be retweeted. It's usually a good idea to retweet your customers or your business.

The timing of your tweets is completely up to you, when is your favorite audience online? If you're tweeting for business, 95 might be your best. When you write about sports, the weekend can be the best. You'll have to do some testing to find out for yourself.

In order not to go crazy, you should definitely use a social media planner. These programs (some free, some not) mean you can set up tweets to post in the future. It can be incredibly useful.

Tip: Ideally, you want your social media timeline to be consistent. This will help your followers know when to expect your tweets and improve those relationships. This means planning a weekly schedule to know when to tweet and stick to it. You don't have to be too ambitious to keep it up.

The ideal would be to post 100 times a day, but if you don't (and always) have enough time to stick to that schedule, that's a bad plan. Make sure you can fit your social network into your current schedule in the long run and you will be much more successful.

What can't I do on Twitter?

Never forget that everyone can and always will see your tweets. So if you use Twitter, don't assume internet anonymity is on your side, even if you don't use your real name. You should only say on Twitter what you would say out loud in public.

This is not a call for self-censorship, just to understand that Twitter is public. If you tweet for work, keep your tweets to the subject. You may have strong political views, but your business account is not the place to spread them. There is no need to create negative feelings towards your company by expressing inconsistent opinions.

Also remember that Twitter is a private company and has the right to deny you access to its services. So follow the terms and conditions if you want to continue using it.
